I recently picked up a stack of old American Rifleman magazines from the early 1950’s off the FREE table at a local gun show.  In the May 1951 publication, it mentions a pump-action Henry rifle–likely a prototype.  Thought the article was pretty interesting and worth sharing on the forum.  Has anyone here ever seen or heard of this rifle?  I’ve been to Cody twice, but don’t recall seeing it on display.

Interesting, indeed. From the article’s description I’m inclined to think it was a prototype. The writer doesn’t specifically state but it seems the Dodge rifle did not have a serial number. The sling mounts seem a bit at odds with my prototype theory.

Definitely not a pump action in any way or form, but rather O. Winchester take on better ways to lad the Henry rifle, see Houze History of Winchester page33 and following.

There were several patent and prototypes made to solve the front loading and split magasine issue, namely by Georges W.Briggs, James D. Smith and O Winchester.

Which were all superseeded by the King Patent loading gate that we know now.

W. C. Dodge was a patent lawyer I believe.
