Hello All,

I have a non Win related question. I have a really good condition 1907 Savage 99 TD in 38/55 Win. Haven’t put too many rounds though it as factory ammo is hard to come by. Found some Win 255gr new factory ammo. Noticed primers are backing out, not flattened, round shoulders, but visually easy to see with new ammo. Tried handloads with 200gr Sierra’s and 35.5grs IMR-3031. Didn’t seem to back out as bad, but still happened. Any ideas are appreciated.

Scott,

It usually means you have a head space issue. If the bolt face is against the back of the shell, it can’t back out.

Your headspace is too long  to some degree , for the smallest tolerance formed cases which factory cartridges are , and also if loaded FLS all the way . Unless extreme headspace , you can easily form cases better fit to your chamber by backing off your FLS die.

Your Loads are light ( Win factory is extremely mild) with not enough pressure to force the head back to the bolt , so the primer easily blows back on firing till it is stopped by the bolt. If higher pressure is used that reforms brass (fireforming) and forces the cartridge head back to the bolt, (your primer wont be proud now )  but if you get head separation splits in your brass , head space is excessive , and a couple reloading tricks will be needed to make brass to fit this chamber, but then wont fit other 38-55 guns and cant be used as interchangeable cartridges for other 38-55’s , as likely the actions on the others wont completely close
