I’ve recently acquired a 12 Gauge L.C. Smith shotgun that somebody painted black. If memory serves me correctly, I read that certain bore cleaners will remove the paint but not touch the finish underneath. Has anybody had to deal with this? The paint is really adhering to the barrels and receiver, it’s flaking off the walnut stock. Thanks, Dave.

I don’t know about bore cleaners, but fingernail and plastic paint stripper/ putty knife worked on my last project. Picked up a mint Browning Sweet Sixteen  other than someone had sprayed camouflage on the stock. Many hours later would not know the difference…..

To remove the paint from the steel barrels, simply use 100% pure acetone (in a very well ventilated area), and wear rubber gloves. Do not use the acetone on the wood unless you plan to refinish it.

No, it will not.  Acetone was no effect on bluing or case color finish.
