I own an old 3855 Winchester octagon barrel.  My underlying question is regarding the serial number. The Serial number is 3 followed by WRACO

my local gun shop said they had never seen one with this type of serial number

i am also curious as to the value as I want to make sure it’s insured. The gun was was given to me by my grandfather who received it from his father. His father passed away in 1913

Thanks in advance for any help that can be provided

The over stamped serial number is not something that Winchester did.  The “WRACO” over-stamp is attributed to Sears & Roebuck when they first began business in Chicago in the late 1890s.  The original serial numbers was something in the 30000 – 39999 range and that puts it somewhere in the November 1897 – April 1898 production period.

I can’t tell you what the value is without seeing the rifle (clear detailed pictures).
