I have a 1892 SRC with 18″ barrel. It’s marked “Winchester model 94 44-40 win.” Someone stamped a 2 over the 4 on the model number. There was talk “rumors” that they were going to make the 94 in .44 back in the day but did not. Has anyone ever seen or heard of a stamping mistake like this?

While the ’92 was still in production?
No, but that was not the original question. Winchester manufactured the 44-40 Model 94s in the late 1960s. Because the Model 94 and Model 92 are very closely related, a later production Model 94 Carbine barrel can be installed on a Model 92 receiver, and I suspect that is what happened in this case.
