I just found a Win. M61, made in 1961. It has a grooved receiver.
On the right side of the trigger guard, behind the trigger is stamped – CHS. The C could be a different letter? What does these letters refer to..?
Love the old blued steel & walnut…. I do intend to join the Winchester Collectors shortly.

Hello and welcome,
Those letters are most likely the initials of a previous owner. I have been working on a research survey of these rifles and have cataloged just over 8,400 individual rifles and none have been marked with those letters.
