Me and my wife where lucky enough to recently be gifted her great grandfathers 1894 Winchester and where hoping that someone might be able to give us a little information about it and answer a few questions we had about it. I was using the tool here to look up the year it was manufactured, but I am a little unsure about what the correct date would be as the serial appears to start with a L to me, is this supposed to be a 1? Also we where wondering about the magazine tube, was it cut down as some point or is it normal for the rifles with the shorter tube to still have the cut in the barrel for the longer one? Anyways I’m a bit green when it comes to these old Winchesters so I look forward to any info provided.

Hello Josh,
Yes, the “L” is actually a “1”. S/N 106245 was manufactured in February 1901. The magazine tube has positively been shortened after the fact.

It wouldn’t be to tough to replace the magazine tube with an original, if You’re so inclined.
