As some of you may know my favorite “orphanage” has proved to be a bit obtuse at times earlier in my collecting career and I was paying close enough attention to make several rather fortuitous acquisitions. I’ve told Bert they apparently don’t use the Red Book to assist in pricing and I’ve asked him not to work too hard on selling them a copy. It seems a new sheriff came to town a few years back and I haven’t been able to steal a nice Winchester in quite some time. I looked at a couple of pretty promising items today. Both were in the “sleeper” category but were priced reasonably. One was an early single shot in 32WCF that looked promising until I discovered the butt stock had apparently been inletted with a chain saw. The other just hit the shelf, they won’t be able to help me on the price so I’ll just bide my time.
Looks like i need to find a few new fishing holes.

Nothing wrong with a .32WCF, but folks aren’t standing in line to buy them. Price can’t be “reasonable” for such a gun as that if there are ANY serious problems–too many more to choose from.

I think the 32WCF would be an fun shooter. I cast and load for it, it’s stingy with lead and powder. Pleasant to shoot. It’s just that I’m finally listening to wiser collectors and passing on the lower condition guns.

C’mon Mike – there’s Rock Island, Amoskeag, Morphys… all sorts of good looking Winchesters to be had
Steve-
Auctions are mostly entertainment for me, I’m a bit too deliberate to do well buying at an auction but i do enjoy myself at charity auctions. Morphy did a great job selling a very unusual rifle for me awhile back and they always offer to sell my “eye candy” pieces when we talk at shows. I have seen some really good deals come out of some of the smaller area gun shows but it takes a bit of shoe leather to flush those bargains.
All kidding aside I made some pretty good acquisitions in Cody and lucked into a nice enough .22 at the orphanage last weekend. TGCA Fall show is only a few months out and it’s in my own back yard. (NO motel bill!) At this point in my collecting career there just aren’t very many I’m looking for. I don’t have the variety or quality you have been fortunate enough to corral but for me it’s like fishing a five-fish limit lake with four good keepers in the live well.
