What worries me isn’t the transport, but unattended tables, especially overnight, at multi day shows. I know they have security—but I still worry.
I’m with you there, I never thought about that until recently when I saw show instructions saying “cover your table at night”….I was like “YOU LEAVE IT ALL THERE!?!?!”
I used to cable at night but now we use whole table zipper covers and lay chairs on top. You have to make your table harder to steal than most. At small shows I take expensive guns home with me. At Tulsa I leave them there but stay until the room has cleared, they did have a table holder steal a Henry. T/R

Very true. That would devastate me on the Henry…it’s the one thing I will have to sock away some money for years in hopes of buying one…can’t imagine it just walking away after having waited years to get one….

I knew a manufacturer’s LE rep who carried several cases of samples in his vehicle, including selective fire weapons. He never took them into his home, never into a motel room when he travelled. They were not visible from the outside of his vehicle. He felt he and his samples were safer if no one saw them.
I also try not to stay at the host hotel or in the host city the night before a show unless the show provides a safe room for overnight storage of firearms.
Mike
I have seen a guy carry his guns in to a hotel in a golf club bag with the wheels. Anybody asks I’m going golfing.

That’s wild. Way back in my 20s I let a friend borrow my Gen 1 Glock for him and his wife to take a CHL class. Of course, he went to a gun show and got his truck broken into…I should call him and remind him what the Gen 1’s are selling for nowadays
Folks, To add a point on this subject, it is becoming a seemingly more common thing for motels to have signage or a paragraph on the registration about “no firearms on the premises”. Carrying long guns in cases into the room kind of is a giveaway you have violated their proviso. When I first ran into this I refused to register, and started checking every motel on that exit. All had the same signage. It is getting to be a real challenge to find ones enroute that do NOT preclude firearms on their premises. What you decide to do is up to you, just telling what I find. Tim

Fair point. I’m a current LEO, so I get into the habit of ignoring all firearms related signage honestly….I do watch out for out of state stuff even though I’m allowed to carry everywhere….some places a little more hostile than down here in Tejas!
My friend that lost his truck and guns in Tulsa was told the hotel clerk was probably in on it. The clerk knows your there for the show. These truck and guns are stolen by out of town professional not local drug users. Tulsa police have told me by the time you figure it’s gone it’s out of state and probably inside a bigger truck.
My brother and I have never lost a gun or vehicle. The one thing these gun and vehicle thefts have in common is they happen when your not in the car and the guns are. The gun show table thefts happen when your eyes are not on your guns. The only way you can do these things is to buddy up. You can be lucky but it’s better to be safe. T/R
TR and interested others, Boy! Sure gives one pause! Tom likely has a good inside scoop on this. Similarly, years ago a buddy and his car full of friends were at the National Gun Club in San Antonio from Anchorage to shoot the World skeet championships. They stopped for supper and came out to find the trunk lid on the rental open and no guns. The police showed a sticker on the bumper that was likely put on at the gun club by a scout, and then the rest would cruise likely restaurants to target those so identified. About the time this happened, the NRA put out in their journals a blurb from the National Gun Club that specifically targeting like this was bunk. John and his friends would dispute that! YOU are the best security. Be obscure, check your conveyance frequently for identifying marks (new electronics would be very hard to find), don’t do the same thing twice, stay in differing motels enroute, drive differing routes if possible, etc. Traveling with a buddy who is alert and capable is no doubt a great deterrent. Jeremy P said Very true. I have a large pelican that does have wheels and a nice handle, but you’re right….I also see people with an upright box on their handcart (good tip also btw) and they put their rifle soft cases upended in that to roll it around….
I used to use a square plastic garbage can lashed to my dolly.

Night before a TGCA show in Waco a few years back several cars in one of the preferred motel’s parking lot were broken into. I stayed there next two nights and hotel staff would not answer questions about it. Word at the next show was the motel staff was in on it. Tim’s account of the bumper stickers is true, I know some folks who were at that shoot. I remember when several hotels in S Texas posted non-conforming “30-06” (no handguns) in their lobbies. I figured since their website where I guaranteed my reservation didn’t mention it and the sign did not conform to state law I was on pretty firm ground in ignoring their sign. Was probably just there to make some folks feel safer.
I keep a low profile while traveling, I’m always armed on the road (ex-LEO) and I’m always alert about my surroundings. I make solid eye contact with every LEO I encounter, especially if they notice that I’m armed. Traveling alone has its challenges but careful planning and tactics minimize the risks. Won’t go wrong into specifics here, send me a PM or stop by my table at a show.

We’ll talk at the Waco show for sure (probably again in Cody, yes we’re going to make it)…. I started thinking about this in hopes that one day I’ll set something up to display, once I feel comfortable that I have stuff that’s worth showing off and I get a good feel for what everyone does…especially those who display for fun and not for sales.

Jeremy-
Was great meeting you in Durant! You’re always welcome to rest a bit at my table at the Texas shows. Looking forward to seeing you in Cody and Waco! The Waco TGCA show should give you a good feel for display tables. Cody displays are awesome as well. I generally don’t have much for sale at the TGCA or WACA shows. I’ll have an old friend offering a few nice Colts and other items at the Waco TGCA Show and quite honestly I don’t know what Bert is bringing to the Cody show. Come to think of it, I don’t know what I’m bringing. Sometimes we just have eye candy. We’ll talk in Waco about places to stay and eat in Cody. PM or call me for dining or lodging tips for Waco. Cody is a long drive from Texas but worth it. You’ll meet some of the best minds in the Winchester collector fraternity and see some truly awesome specimens. If at all possible schedule at least one day at the Cody Firearms Museum and the other museums at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. They offer special deals for WACA members and I promise you’ll be planning a return trip before you leave the parking lot.

Clarence,
I’m with you as everything in padded cases and a large heavy duty plastic garbage can lashed to a dolly works well!
Preferably a new garbage can also!
At least a well sanitized clean garbage can!

Yessir, we did already book a VRBO for Cody and definitely will split our time between the show, the museum, and a little at Yellowstone. We’re continuing on from Cody after 3 nights down through the Tetons so we’re making an 8-day driving trip out of it…dining tips are always welcome!
I’ll probably day trip down to Waco honestly, looking forward to it!
