OfflineThe Fall Texas Gun Collectors Association Show and Auction in Denton, TX is a little over a month away! October 17-19 at the Embassy Suites. I know some of you already have tables or are planning to attend but some of you might want to come by and take a look. We have more Winchester collectors than when I joined so you’ll see some familiar faces. Hope to see you there!

My smiling face will be there… Mike & Elliot talked me in to it. Lets get more Yankee’s to this show, I need to be able to speak someone in my own language!
Elliot’s sometime running buddy JWA is TGCA’s newest Life Member, now we just need to figure out how to smuggle him into Texas so he can enjoy a show!

You have to figure out a way for me to retire earlier so I have the spare time! I am working on that from my end but it is a slow process….
And, FWIW, I am now an honorary “Texan”
Thanks for all your help Mike!

OfflineI hate to break it to you, Jeff, but retiring doesn’t guarantee spare time. I had a nearly four hour conference call yesterday, spent time at the bank and my “office” today balancing the checking account and preparing a treasurer’s report for tomorrow’s non-profit committee meeting. I somehow managed to get in a workout and a good walk before focusing on business this morning. Somewhere in there I spent some time on my “retirement” business. After I slip out to the range for rimfire therapy with Zeb in the morning I have a meeting agenda to prepare for tomorrow evening’s meeting. Tomorrow’s 1PM virtual meeting was cancelled so I may actually get my nap in tomorrow! Should have time to order scooters and update the movers for the TGCA show tomorrow in my “spare time”. Rednecks With Paychecks will start trickling past one of my machines any hour now and they like their refreshments cold, wet and plentiful so will need to monitor it closely from now through Sunday.
I’m a failure as a retiree. I hope you do better, Jeff!

OfflineJeff and Mike, Most see a retiree as first, retarded. Might be true as we seem to not know how to say “NO!”. Secondly we are seen as fresh meat to take on more and more tasks no one else wants or is capable of anymore as they age out. You get used just as much as you can stand and you are often lucky to hear the word “thank you”!! Mike–I will say it. Thank you for what you do for your area! As to all your involvement, its all on you. Jeff, your turn is coming!

OfflineThanks, Tim. I told a younger committee member I hadn’t used an Excel spreadsheet in over 20 years (actually closer to 25) but I needed a check register for my duties as the new committee treasurer. I had no problem using the template supplied with Office365 but I believe I could have set it up anyway. Turns out everything I remembered still works, just better. She asked me to send her the rough chart and I wanted to tell her I was old, not stupid. My last job my co-workers had no idea my professional background so I finally took the easy way out and let them treat me like I was old and stupid. I would occasionally straighten them out but it’s not worth the trouble.
But yes, the recovery committee work is trying my patience and I’m getting more heat than praise. One quasi-government agency I’m forced to deal with has made it very clear they don’t share my sense of urgency and they don’t answer to me or my committee. Nuff said. Nap time.
I had a very enjoyable rimfire therapy this beautiful morning with our friend Zebulon so life is good!

OfflineGreat show in Denton, Texas this past weekend, was great to see so many WACA members and forum folks! TGCA’s incoming president and former show chair, John Vance, asked me about getting WACA members more involved at the TGCA shows. Upon reflection I’m thinking we could have a WACA section where members could elect to have their tables along with WACA SWAG/recruiting tables. TGCA has members in 48 states and there are dozens of WACA table covers (and members) at every TGCA show. Embassy Suites has a happy hour every night during the show so a reception say, Friday night, will be easy. Both associations are strong and we have many members in common so it makes perfect sense. I see WACA members at the TGCA show that I never see in Cody. Some TGCA members have won national awards with displays that also appeared at our shows. I saw the engraved 1866 that I believe won a big award at the NRA show. TGCA displays rival the fine efforts we enjoy in Cody. Jesi is on hand at our fall shows to promote CFM and field enquiries. We have an auction on Saturday night; bars open at 2, bidding starts at 5.
Great entertainment and opportunities! The Embassy Suites is a great venue and host; beautiful rooms are an elevator ride and a short walk away from the hall where we can fit over 300 tables. The hotel staff takes good care of us and security is handled by Company B of the Texas Rangers. I need some ideas so that we can give WACA and TGCA board members a place to start working on this idea. TGCA shows are typically third weekend in April and October.

OfflineSecond your suggestions. The Denton show was a good one. I have to touch my wallet from time to time to see if I really Xcaped without buying anything. I’d like to say “”discipline but my conscience reminds me “cash poor” is all that saved me.

Bill-
I completely understand! My homeowners’ insurance bill is glaring at me from my desk and I picked up my property tax bill during my morning walk. I’ve realized I collect the guns I like to shoot and I’ve got more guns than I have time to shoot right now. I would have liked to thin the herd a bit at the show but that wasn’t in the cards. That’s OK, I’m not mad at any of them, they’re all keepers.

OfflineYes, you have some really good specimens. I’m particularly impressed with that deluxe Model 12 and the 38-55 1894 you were shooting at the club.
You know, it strikes me that In rifle form, the 1894 has a lot more “presence” than the handy little carbines we’re used to seeing. It gives me a much better appreciation of what a blockbuster the full size rifle in .30 Winchester must have been in 1895.

Thanks, I’ve been fortunate to find two very nice Model 12 Trap guns. My friend Wes brought a nice two-barrel 1897 set to tease me with but he isn’t quite ready to sell it. I like the 1894 carbine but you’re right, the rifles are better shooters, at least for my purposes. That 38-55 will never catch a discerning collector’s attention but it has character and a good bore. I’m gonna have some fun with it for awhile.
