When I research a shotgun I use the Winchester Dates of Manufacture 1849 – 2000 First Edition By George Madis. Many of the guns being sold are dated a year different than this book states. Where else can I research to find out which is correct? Thanks !

Paul,

The book you are using is unfortunately fraught with hundreds of errors.  Depending on the specific Model and the specific timeframe, there are two sources to obtain the exact dates of manufacture; (1) the Cody Firearms Museum (CFM) records office, or (2) Pauline Muerrle.

If you only want to know what the correct year of manufacture is, I highly recommend using the Resources link found near the top of all WACA website pages.  The information on the WACA website was primarily derived from the records at the CFM.

Your third option is to post a question here on the WACA forums, or to send me a PM with the Model & serial number of the Winchester you are researching.

I keep the WACA link pulled up on my phone. Doesn’t get much quicker than that, and it’s correct!
