Maybe a little of topic, but here goes: I have 2.5 days on the backend of a hunting trip to Cheyenne in October. Torn between going to Jackson Hole or Cody? Will be travelling solo.
My plan in Jackson would be to visit the National Museum of Wildlife Art (I’m a huge fan and collector of Sporting Art), with a day trip to Tetons or Yellowstone.
Versus
Cody, with an obviously stop at the Gun Museum and Buffalo Bill Center of the West, with a day trip to Custard’s Battlefield (obsessed as a child/young adult).
Being from Pennsylvania, not sure when the next opportunity will be to visit the area. If it were you, where would you choose?!?! Thanks!!
p.s. huge fan a local microbrews as well!!
A few years ago we made a road trip that began at Jackson Hole, then through Yellowstone, and then ended in Cody. In my opinion, Jackson Hole was an overrated tourist trap (and traffic nightmare). Cody, by far was the highlight of our trip. The Buffalo Bill Center of the West was amazing and we could not get through it all in one day. We missed the Buffalo Bill portion as well as the Whitney western art portion (I spent too much time in the firearms and plains Indians portions of the museum). We even planned a trip a couple years later just to go back and see the parts of the museum we missed the first time around. If you’re a fan of western art/paintings you won’t be disappointed–they have Frederick Remington’s, etc. When done with the museum, be sure to visit the Old Trail Town then have lunch at the Irma Hotel. I would choose Cody over Jackson Hole hands-down. I’ve attached links to each below.

You need to contact the Cody Museum. It may still be under reconstruction? If not, the museum is a 2 day deal.

Thanks for the links deerhunter! I did notice the Cody museum is under construction. Bummer. My gut is telling me I’ll need more than 2.5 days in Cody. CBF looks to be over 2.5 hr. away as well. Has anyone been to the National Museum of Wildlife museum?? Would really like to see some Bob Kuhn, Carl Rungius, Philip Goodwin, as well as Remington and Russell works. I’m sure they’re well represented at The Whitney Western Art Museum in Cody as well.

I’m looking forward to touring the museum after the firearms section renovation is completed but I think it will be worth a stop in the interim as well. I also enjoyed the Old Trail Town (out by the rodeo grounds) but it won’t be open during your trip. I don’t think a firearms enthusiast should plan on spending less than two days at the Cody museum. The firearms section takes me more than a day to cover and the other museums are well worth the time. If you try to see it in a day you’ll be planning a return trip before you leave the parking lot. OTOH I’m looking forward to my next trip after multiple visits. The Custer Battlefield is one of my favorite historic sites as it helped me understand more of what has been written about this battlefield. I miss the interpretive tours and talks that are no longer offered but the video in the visitors’ center is probably worth your time.
If you enjoy reading I think you’ll find the book sections of both gift shops very inviting.

nice area. We were at Fort Ligonier about a month ago.
Nice. Did you get to see the Lafayette/Washington Pistols as part of the permanent display?!?!?
