I have an older box of Winchester .44-40 ammo that is marked for using in Winchester models 73, 93, 53 rifles and others. Model 93?
Is that a known factory error for that box? How common? Any thoughts?
Thanks.

That is a “typo” or misprint error. It should be “92” not “93”.Bert
Yep, I agree – definitely not intended to be marked for a model 93 (pump shotgun with external hammer). It should be marked for the model 92.
Is that a fairly common box or not so common? Just curious!
Thanks Bert. (And by the way, that article you submitted in the Winchester Collector Magazine on the Model 43 is pretty darn good.)
Very unusual, but not unheard of. I have a mint, unopened Winchester box in .40-60 WCF. We all know the .40-60 cartridge was designed for the Winchester model 1876, but my box label reads “Adapted to the Winchester Model of ’86 and Single shot Rifles”. No where on the box does it mention Model 1876.
I don’t think I have seen a corrected box, only the errors. If there is a corrected box, it would be the rare one!

Bryan,
Thanks for the link, very helpful. So maybe this era box never had the correct rifles the ammo was for. Interesting.
