OfflineWell after the Winchester Pine Board Penetrattion discussion, I was determined to do a test with two bullets & loads from my NRA Centennial 94 aka Mod 64a, 24″ Barrel. Today I shot Barnes 190gr Original FN & LVR @ Aprox 2,175fps and Nosler 170gr Partition @ Aprox 2,250fps into this box of material from aprox 15ft. It’s a tough median, and bullet travel was from top to bottom. A 7/8″ plywood was the start to simulate a shoulder bone, then 2-3 layers of cardboard between layers of dry magazines, and foam between some layers instead of cardboard.
The first half distance was easiest, few books was softer kids coloring books, but then i went to layers of 5 magazines totally, thin layer of cb or foam between.
I wrote results description best I could, my assessment of all I saw.![]()

OfflineMe being just a WT Hunter this really a to tough test, but it still shows a lot! This pic really tells the results along with the final. The Nosler 170gr Partition did penetrate further, but the wound channel of the Barnes 190gr was immediate, and did much more damage thru the mid way part. The Nosler did as its famous for, slow and steady mushroom! But look at the lead fragments damage after the first wood, which was 7/8 thick plywood & 3 magazines! And the channel the entire first 2/3 was much more!
IMO, for Whitetail, the Barnes is the better, but if for elk or Blackbear, maybe the Nosler? Idk, what do you’ll think?![]()
