Lever experts, 

You know I am a model 70 guy, with only marginal knowledge of the lever guns.  I’d like to get the experts to weigh in on this rifle. 

I don’t personally collect lever rifles, but a client would like me to take this rifle in on partial trade for a nice model 70.  I’m not opposed to it, but would simply be looking to turn this rifle over.  I just don’t know how to value it.  From the chambeirng and year, on down through the condition, I have no idea what this rifle is worth.

I can see the stock has been poorly refinished and can see the the small damages on the right side of the receiver and forestock.  Other than this, the rifle appears to have original bluing and I can’t see any modifications.  What else can you tell me about its condition and ultimately its value? 

Thanks in advance for those with more knowledge about this rifle than I possess!

Justin:

Looks to be all original and in a desirable configuration (octagon barrel in .38-55 cal.) but damaged wood.  This combination is fairly common and thus would not command a premium so if it were me and I was just going to flip it, I would not want to be into it for more than about $950.

Thanks Rick.  Great insight!  In a world where lever guns can go from $500 to $50,000, a guy really needs experts to help him know what he’s doing!  I appreciate it.

I think Rick is right on about the price.  I don’t think the stock was ever sanded but a coat of something has been added.  If I was going to keep it I would be tempted to remove the last layer of finish.
