As You may be aware I’ve been working on a pre 1900 lever gun display in carbine , rifle and musket. Well I have the 3 1895’s, a s.r.c in 30gov’t03, a rifle in 30gov’t06, and a Russian contract musket in 7.62R. I ‘ve never had a lot to do with the ’95’s and I am just starting to find out all 30-03’s, 30-06’s and 7,62’s are not the sameConfused. We recently had a large ,by our standards, ammunition auction here, held by Switzer’s Auctions. I purchased 28 different lots of ammo, everything from 2 part boxes of .44r.f.Henry to some 7.62r in stripper clips. Any way I got this stuff all home last night and started sorting, I have 3 different labeled 30-06 cartridges, 30gv’t06, 30-06, 30-06 Springfield, . 2 different 30-03’s, 30-03 and 30gov’t03, and the 7.62 is a whole nuther story, I 7.62 54R, 7.62-39, 7.62 Chekx, 7.62, and 7.62 Spanish. I find this all pretty confusing Lucy, and was Just wonderin’ if somebody here can explain the differences in these cartridges. I never was a hunter per say and never got to involved with the different more modern cartridges. In another post I stated I use a .22, a 30-30 and a 12 ga., and probably won’t be shooting these ’95’s any way but I’d like to know the difference’s

Henry,

Not trying to “rain on your parade”, but any Model 1895 in 30-03, 30-06, or 7.62R is not a “pre 1900” lever gun.

In regards to your question about the cartridge marking, the 30 GOV’T 03 and 30 GOV’T 06 were the original markings used when first introduced. Those that are simply marked 30-03 and 30-06 are later production (not sure when), and the 30-06 Springfield marking is post WW II.

7.62R is the original 1891 Moisin-Nagant cart, STILL in use in Russian machine guns, which must be a record for longevity.  7.62×39 was invented for the Russian SKS during WWII, but became the most widely produced cartridge in history after the AK-47 was chambered for it.  Never heard of the others, unless they’re variant names for the 7.62×51 Nato (.308).

Confusion about how to designate the .30-03 arose because there was a previous .30 already in service, called then .30 US or .30 Govt, later .30-40.

Ok Fellas and thanks for clarifying some of this for Me . I’m gonna write some of this down ’cause My memory is getting shorter the older I get, I think I’ve just learned to much and can’t store it all any more. And Bert , I guess I should re-phrase My wording on the display I’m working on. It will be all the  Winchester lever “models” designed pre 1900. If I said they were built pre-1900, I guess I would be as hypocritical as some advertisers saying their gun is antique when the letter They provide says the gun was built in 1902. I think it would be hard to come by an “antique” mod. ’95 Russian contract musket huh.
