Just acquired a 1885 low wall with a barrel top marked 25-35, along with some 25-35 ammo. Can anyone fill me in as to the date of the rifle, and its original caliber? Would the new Hornady Leverlution ammo be safe to fire in it? Serial Number is 78522. Thanks.

Hello Vernon,

Winchester Single Shot (Model 1885) serial number 78522 was originally manufactured in June 1897 as a 22 Long Rifle rim fire with a 24-inch 1/2 octagon barrel. Somebody would have needed to do some extensive alterations to convert a low-wall action made for 22 LR rim fire to shoot a 25-35 center fire cartridge. Accordingly, I would strongly advise against shooting it with any modern manufactured 25-35 ammo.
