That makes sense, Rick. This carbine blurs the line a bit but if the ledger says “carbine” that works for me.

I wish you’d quit posting those pics of those really cool “M” words, Steve! I sold off my outliers to focus my limited resources on Winchesters and that sweet 94 is a bit distracting. If you’re not careful Bert will post a pic of his “R” word or maybe even talk about his old red Dodge. 😉

What?  Do you mean this… Remington’s response to a Model 70 Super Grade.

Ya’ , this one is all rifle on the front end and all s.r.c. on the back end, complete with saddle ring.

You see the same thing in Marlins.  Here is a M1894 short rifle I have with 20 inch half octagon rifle barrel front end and carbine rear with ring and carbine butt.  Neat that it’s a takedown too:

Man, that is a beauty of a Marlin!!!!  I wouldn’t mind that in my safe.

Thanks Manuel.  It is a rare one.  I still have it.  I had the same thing in a Marlin M1893 .25-36.  Carbine rear, short rifle front, takedown. That one also had a full magazine but was a full round barrel and not a half octagon barrel.  One of the reasons I love special order rifles is to ponder just what the original purchaser was thinking when they ordered it.  You know they were thinking something!

Bert-

I must admit that is one handsome rifle, that damn sure ain’t yellow pine between that ebony fore end cap and the butt plate. You could put a dowel rod and a trowel handle in that stock and I’d still get excited about it.

Steering this thread back on course…

I have seen other first model 1873’s that had delayed shipment dates.  I have SN 15259 rifle that went to the warehouse April 19, 1876 but was not shipped until December 1, 1878.  Apparently, the recession caused by the panic of 1873 lasted for years.

This octagon barrel carbine is a very interesting piece.

I call myself a collector as it sounds better than hoarder

I also have a 1st model ’73 carbine #15718 that went into the warehouse in 1876 and was not shipped until  June of 1878.

It seems like there’s a lot of detailed discussion going on about this particular Winchester 1873. The consensus seems to be that it’s a rare and interesting piece, especially considering its factory modifications. It blurs the line between carbine and rifle, but based on the documentation and features, calling it an “octagon-barreled carbine” seems accurate. Cool
