…gang, I just recently came across this Model 52 that is dated 1924. Funny thing is I cannot seem to find a lot of information on these early models as opposed to the Sporter models. Can anyone throw some history and thoughts on condition does it look to be original or was it refinished and

…butt plate shown in your picture was used on the Models 53, 54, 55, and 94... never on the Model 64. If it was used on the Model 1892, it would have been a special order only.

It was not just the Model 1906/06 that the bluing came off when the proof marks was struck.  All Winchester Models manufactured from the Teens through the early 1930s experienced the same issue.  It is one of the many visual clues that I use to identify an …

What is the serial number on both of those Model 06 rifles?

…it will go on a buddy's 30 WCF that came with a hideous rubber shotgun butt pad. It's going to be hunted with in Louisiana.

Also used on the Model 55 and 64, as well as 1892 after SN# 98,000, according to Pirkle

…. I know this has been discussed at some point on the Forum but I don't remember - are the I checkered guns rarer than the H checkered in the Model 1892 - both are hard to find for sure. Nice photos which when magnified one can really get a good look at the gun - thanks for sharing.

…trapper in 25-35, in the condition of most trappers you see, but check out the patent date:

Al,

That is most likely a one-of-a-kind Model 1894 Trapper.  The Patent date error on it is the only one that I have ever seen.

Bert

Thanks Bert.

I am going to assume that you are asking about a Winchester Model 1894...  If that is a correct assumption, it was manufactured in April, 1906.

Here's an interesting record for a Model 1895 that eventually went to Heere in assembly:

Rifle, 40/72, Octagon, Plain,

In answer to your question, No, it is not strange.  All five of LAPD marked Model 1894 Carbines in my research survey are marked on the left rear side of the butt stock only.
