The problem is the gun does not letter as a 50 but 45-75.

Did Winchester chamber any 1876 SRC’s in 50-95? Letter says “Rifle” and octagon barrel. Strike three.

Mike

they made 24 50-95 carbines.

…(Plating = #11, Color or cased Finish #23, etc.)  We know the "CF" on lower tangs occurs on both color case hardened and blued guns (1973, 1876, 1886) and on blued guns (1892, 1894, and would expect the same for color case hardened 1892's or 1894's).  So the "CF" we see on the lower tang…

…see in the photos it had some rusting and has been cleaned.  The lower tang and receiver finish whether CCH or blued should match.

As for the 1876 with the 1937 stamped on the lower tang, dont know there would be a correlation between the two.

As a matter of fact there is a famous photo of a young TR in buckskins holding what appears to be an 1876 and a dagger stuffed in his cartridge belt in the 1909 book I mentioned above. The other photo sounds familiar but I may be confusing it with this

…Hudsons invoice has an item "CF" #23 case hardening, receiver. The charge for this was $1.50. I assume W. O. stands for work order.

Also my 1876  that letters with a set trigger and removed before shipping is stamped 1937  and 102 on tang. I think the 102 is for removal of set trigger. My

Express  24

I looked in Herbert Houze's 1876 book and came up with the following numbers.  I didn't count muskets or entries that said receivers only.  I also ignored rifles changed to…

…carbines and carbines changed to rifles to keep it simple.

Total 1876 rifles:  53,367

Total 1876 carbines:  9,623

That looks closer to 1 in 5.5 ratio of carbines to rifles

That seems more like what I see!

Anyone have a copy of that…

…Merz has 30 rifles and 2 carbines - Grove has 2, both rifles - Collectors has almost exclusively rifles. Where you really find rarity in the Model 1876 is in checkering, case hardening and 50 caliber. The attached gun has all these features and I am lucky to have it.

Assuredly a "Story Gun" that would need explaining as why it is in the condition its
