Looking for a buttstock for Dad’s model 71 deluxe rifle. I don’t know the serial number, but it is a long tang version. I would prefer one with the butt plate and sling mount. He bought the rifle but didn’t notice the chunk of wood missing near the receiver. We already found a forearm, that was broken too. Thanks in advance to anyone that can help out!

A skilled gunsmith may be able to graft a bit of wood from your broken fore end to your butt stock. Unfortunately a skilled gunsmith is probably as rare as a M71 stock.

I’d be reluctant to give up on repairing the original deluxe buttstock. The odds of finding a replacement long tang stock with hardware are small and making one using the original as a pattern, having it checkered and the hardware transferred and fitted, would be inordinately expensive. There are enough stockmakers competent to make the repair you need, if you are persistent with your inquiries. The originality of the rifle would be preserved, minor warts and all, and it would likely be the least expensive option. A local gunsmith replaced a small divot knocked from the toe of a mint Browning Double Auto … it slid out of an unzipped soft case and hit hard on its buttplate at an angle. You can barely detect the repair. [Mike, it was Larry.]
