Henry,
If memory serves me right, serial number around 700,000, and the year 1927, was kinda a rule of thumb back in the day for most of the .22 model 90 Collectors around these parts. I’m wondering what the earliest known serial numbered Winchester model 90 with a S.S. barrel might be. I’m not sure that information is available, or would be.

Oh Yee of little faith…
Stainless barrels were introduced in September 1926. The last Model 90 serial number in August of 1926 was 725953. Therefore, I would expect that the earliest Model 90 with a Stainless Steel barrel would be somewhere in the 725000 serial range. Per my research survey of the late production Model 90s & 06s (shared serial range beginning at 713200) the first Model 90 found thus far with a Stainless Steel barrel is 725773.
FWIW, s/n 700000 was manufactured on July 29th, 1924.

I understand the pre 700,000 , I would like a legitimate one of course. Although the one a R.I.A. was ser#680087, I guess I’m lucky I didn’t get it. Actually I didn’t even get a chance to bid on it, it was over $5,000.00 before I could drop a bid, and at the hammer price of $9,000.00 , that would make it a $19 – $20,000.00 gun to me . Whew
