OfflineI’m looking for a crescent steel buttplate for a recently acquired Model 1904 rifle. Based on experimenting with pieces from other rifles I have, Models 1892 and 1894 buttplates will fit…..and maybe others. Very slim (and pricey) pickings on ebay and other online sources. Average condition will be fine.
The photo shows why I’m in need. This is what happens when a rifle is stored on wet carpeting for who knows how long.![]()

Thanks,
Tom

OnlineHave you tried to clean that up at all?
I would start with some 0000 steel wool and canola oil.
If you don’t mind removing any blueing, electrolysis is a great option to pull that rust off.
-Glass jar with water and baking soda mixed in
– Steel nail
– 18 gauge wire
– 9 volt battery
Connect the positive wire to the steel nail and the negative to your buttplate.
Give it 15-20 minutes. you might need several cycles with fresh water and steel.
