Dan,
Since I’m also a TACA member, (Tulsa Arms Collector Association) I get in at 5:30 p.m. Thursday to drop off, and in Friday morning at 8:15 to set up early.
I’m allowed one helper, so Roger gets the other badge and orange sticker. We hope to be set up by the time the regular exhibitors begin entering the building at 10 a.m.
Starting to get excited!
Sea ya,
Mitch
oh really – I have not heard of the TACA, very interesting. I really don’t know a lot about gun values and recognizing them while the guy has it over his shoulder, I am not good at that. I have been a shooter for years and understand guns and really not bad when it comes to working on them, but a real serious “hey mister is that a model XX Winchester or _________” I am not that guy. I want to be, just never played in that arena until lately. I will visit with you about this TACA you speak of though.
Dan
Well, I had the good opportunity to meet Mitch and Roger – in case anyone is wondering, they are both very real people, not just some fictitious bot hiding behind an avatar. Although I only got to visit a short time, we were “working” right, they seemed to be very pleasant guys. And since we all live close, and I work downtown, really just a few short miles from them, I hope to be able to treat them to breakfast or lunch, maybe Talley’s on 66 or there are a couple other restaurants in the area that might be better.

Tulsa was wonderful… met up with good friends, got my scooter and really enjoyed finding goodies and ate twice at Billy Ray’s BBQ… I’m “Catfish content” till November. The flight home took 3 stops and 11 hours… I’m still groggy but very satisfied. BTW… Model 75 Sporters were few and those seen were really expensive. Elliot, JWA & Flysalot are alive & well and having more fun than most people I know. Cheers till the Colorado show my friends…

Ben, how expensive were the 75 Sporters? Jeff told me I paid high retail for mine. I had a couple of phone conversations with 1873man and he said he a had a good show. He and his brother had bought some stuff. He said there were less tables this time. Only about 4000. Really wanted to be there.
Ben I have not set anything up for Greeley. I need to go. Heard Colorado is getting tough on gun shows. Don’t remember all the details.

I went by the WACA booth and talked to Vinny for a bit….then totally forgot to send a message to JWA, sorry I missed you. My first time there, lots of folks and guns. I parked a long way away to walk in the rain. Now I know!
I saw a couple booths with decent pricing and they clearly had people’s attention. Sorry I didn’t catch anyone else, I probably skipped a lot trying to do a “survey” of everything there.
We are on our way home. Show was good, saw guns changing hand mostly dealer to dealer. I picked up a nice Colt US DFC and a nice early 44-40 loaded ammo box with the O.F. Winchester patent primer. It’s a lot nicer looking than my other one. Got to meet JWA (Jeff) for the first time, I really enjoyed meeting him. Talked with Chris (1892takedown) a few times and it’s always good to catchup with him. Saw some unique 73’s and learned a little more about the odd things Winchester did with 73’s.

Sorry I missed you too Bob. I saw this booth where I’d bet money you got this ammo. He had a LOT of really nice old ammo in tubs.

Chuck, the 75 Sporters I saw ranged from $1,600 for a nice pre-war to over $1,900. for a grooved top post war… I only saw 6 or 7 total, but they were all pretty nice. No “bargain 75 sporter’s” from my perspective… the prices were about $300. higher than last fall’s Tulsa show from what I recall…. Greeley is still a very good show… it’s about 800 tables with lots of quality & no beef jerky, beanie babies or black guns. Last year attendance was off due to the NRA show in Dallas being scheduled right on top of the CGCA show…. not very considerate on the NRA’s part. The hotels are reasonable… With C&R items & antiques being the main focus, the local gun laws aren’t too problematic. What you like, will be there. Cheers & hope you can make it. Ben

Prices were high this time. I sold a couple guns, nothing too cool, well, really not cool at all. I made a couple of trades and one purchase. I traded a S&W 18-3 and a set of Goncalo Alves Grips for a Thompson Center – intentionally, it was the rifle my grandson shot his first deer with and actually all three of his deer were from that gun. My buddy, who’s tables they are anyway, had a nice pre-64 Model 70 Standard-Weight, 1956 vintage he thinks, in 243 that I have been slobbering over, some walker came by with a 1903 in not too bad of shape and I snagged it for 400$ then traded that and a S&W 48-3 in .22 mag for that 70. Not sure I was a winner, but we are both happy with the deal. I am shaming him to put a scope on the 70. He is a good-good friend, and we neither one of care about coming out winner, heck if one of us wants something the other has, we often just give it to each other, but the “trading” was fun for us this weekend.

Oh, and I did get to meet Jenny on Saturday – she wouldn’t have known me from Adam. I checked to see if she wanted or knew anyone who wanted to buy some prints that were commissioned by Winchester; which, she was not, because they really did not have anything to do with advertising, which is fine, because they didn’t. Although she said they were neat and she had never seen them before, they just did not fit her wheelhouse.

Dan Mitch and i will take you up on that lunch. The Wanenmacher was a great time sold 24 Winchesters and one Remington but did pick up a Colt bulls eye target w/elephant ears 3 digit, a Colt 1900 with the sight safety 3 digit and a colt 1903 made in 21. and a Winchester 42 There went my profit. can’t wait till November.

Roger, I like those early Colt semi autos too. My 2nd Army Contract had the safety removed by Colt. I need one with the safety. A 1st Army Contract was in a recent auction but it was too ugly to pay the big bucks.

Jeremy,
Sorry I missed you, my table is one row over from the WACA table (I have to sit and stare at Vinny all day) so you were close, very close. 😉
Judging by the completely full parking lot I would have to say the show was a big success. I took 14 guns and a case of Model 69 books and sold everything the first day except for 1 measly little Winchester 67 which is very nice but there were 100 others at the show as well. Best show for sales I have ever had (anywhere) and I know some of the WACA members did very well also.
I will catch you next time!

Bob, it was a REAL pleasure talking to you also and putting a face with a name. I missed Chris (again) this time but one of these days I will catch up and say hello.
