OfflineOnce again I am helping out a deceased friend’s widow. I have no horse in this stable, but she did call me and ask her if I could help her to sell this. My old friend passed a couple years ago, and Loved the John Wayne movies and such, as many of us do. So much so when I would call him and ask him what he was doing or did, he would tell me that he was just helping his old buddy out, John Wayne, as he was in a scrape, and could use some help, so he would have an Antique model 1892, or an 1894, in his hand, and rub it down when watching it! He always told me that he took up a post from behind his couch, as an old Deer hunter, and was shooting at the bad guys from his living room, as his wife told me that she would listen to him spin these stories on the phone and shake her head.
I’ll post pictures, as I have many from her collection, here in my possession, to try to help her out. I was with Willie when he bought these back in 2007 or so. They were a limited production, and discontinued in 2009. They are in Great condition, as he would take them out and admire them, and wipe them down with an oil rag or silicone gun cloth. As I told him not to leave them in the boxes and the Styrofoam, with the plastic around them, that have some kind of grease like oil on the plastic that is pretty normal from what I’ve seen over the years. . He had his gun room in a controlled environment with the two dehumidifiers running constantly, and you could eat off they’re floors, as his wife and him kept the place immaculate. These are practically untouched! NIB!!!
These are the Winchester Model 1892 John Wayne Custom Grade, (1000 mfg. msrp $3,499.00), and the High Grade,(4000 mfg. msrp. $1,999.00 w/saddle Ring), matching serial numbers set, in 44-40 caliber, 18 1/2 inch Barrel, with the Gold signature, Large Loop naturally, Engraved with the John Wayne, “Courage, Grit, Strength”, discontinued in 2009! With checkered deluxe Walnut!

I have several other pictures showing all the shipping boxes and the other boring pictures that most don’t really want to see, as everything from the distributor is here!
She’s asking $6,500.00 for both shipped! Any and all offers will be considered, as I will present them to her. This is the start of a few things that she is starting to unload, as it’s been a while, and she has given a few thing to her family, already, which I suggested, to her a couple years ago, after we met, after Willies services. He was old school, and didn’t care for the new so called cell phones as his, “flipper phone”, as he called it was enough for him. He would often say he didn’t do computers and was proud of it! Please don’t ask what else is there as I’m not at Liberty to discuss anything at this time and won’t, out of respect for her.

OfflineI was just thinking that if anyone is considering a possible trade, I can accommodate them, as my friends wife wouldn’t be interested, but I could pay her the $$$, and maybe acquire something I’m interested in!
PM, me with any ideas as we can get creative, and I can do almost anything, in most cases, if you’re money is tight! She only wants cash, and I can do that part of the deal!
Thanks for looking,
Anthony

Offers?
Anthony
Anthony I would offer you 5.5k but think you can do better for the widow if you will list them on GB or GI. I have seen this exact set go for $9500 and $9900 in the last 6 months. I did pick up a set for $7575 on GB recently with a matching JW Ruger and weirdly serial #. They had it listed in an auction with a starting price of 7575 and I was the only bidder. I wouldn’t auction them unless you are willing to start at zero. I know that sounds counter intuitive but weirdly the guys get competitive once they start bidding and I watch Commemorative Winchesters starting at zero sell all day while others listed for less just sit. Crazy but I see it every day on GB. I watched a Larry Bird Winchester start at zero 4 weeks ago and it went for $7400. Meanwhile another seller has had a Larry Bird for sale on GI for 9.9k for over a year! If you don’t want the risk and If you got time, I would just list them at 8k and I think they move in a couple months for you. I’ll be your Plan B if all else fails. Good luck, Buck!

OfflineBuck,
That’s solid advice, and I will present that to her tomorrow. I completely understand you’re point, and I like where you’re heads at, on this. When we talked, she wanted me to offer them here first, as she remembers all the stories Willie and I would share over a cup of coffee, before we would head down to the Gun Room!
Thanks,
Anthony

OfflineGentlemen,
Thanks for the advice and all you’re suggestions!
Buck,
I can appreciate what you’re saying in regards to those Leather cases. They surely are nice, and have that great leather aroma, after I opened them up.
Jeremy,
If she chooses to go that way with the G. B. then I can suggest, a couple different well respected Lister’s, who do pretty well on there.
Thanks Al,
As the pictures really don’t do it or them justice, but I figured if someone wanted more, they would ask! I remember Chuck’s comment here a few weeks ago, about the possibility of WACA not being around, and even though most of us hard core Winchester Collectors, are into the older Pre-64 stuff, and mainly the Antique Winchesters. As we get older, we change and learn to adapt to many different things in life. If we don’t try to make a few subtle changes and adapt to the influx of the younger crowd that we’re starting to see show up here, he may be correct. IMO! With all of the refinished rifles we keep seeing and talking about, and helping the new members out, I think we have a responsibility to try to keep things going while we can.
I’m gonna contact her this morning and while the weather is mild and nice for January, see if I can pick her up and her lady friend who also lost her husband awhile back, and I have helped her go through her collection. These gals love hitting a mid to late morning brunch type of place, and we’ve done it in the past and are overdue. Pretty amazing how two slightly built lady’s, can have an appetite like they do, and enjoy the time together at those get together meets. My friend who passed told her to contact me with his collection if anything should happen to him, and she did. I don’t believe in hounding someones widow after they pass to gain access to their collection. I’m just not built that way!

Thanks Al,
That would be the way to go, there’s a couple sellers on there who get top dollar due to reputation and following…good luck they are beautiful, I just don’t “need” them
although, I do like the newer stuff too.

OfflineThanks Jeremy,
I am heading out shortly to pick the two gals up, as my wife of 43 years will join us, and we will pick them up, as the chatter in the car gets to be hilarious! IMO!
I’ll present the information, as I’ve printed out the thread as I most commonly do, th show the gals, as they get intrigued with my presentations! LOL!

OfflineWhat a great time we had at our late brunch/early dinner meet up as these gal’s we’re yapping the whole time and my wife had them in stitches. A lot of good stories were being told of many old adventures in buying ou collections and all the characters that would show up on invite to either buy or sell, as we’re sometimes known to do!
Well the decision was unanimous as they enjoyed my presentation with notes and the copies of the thread post, and all of the positive opinion’s. It made me look good.
Gonna go ahead and move forward with that, on G.B. as it’ll take a little but we’ll get it done!
I’ll post again on this matter as time warrants it.
Thanks again All!
Anthony
