How much 30-40 Krag brass do you have, what brand is it?  While I have a decent supply, I might be interested in what you have (I have three rifles chambered for it).

Bert, when was the 1st highwall chambered in the 30-40?  I’m trying to figure out if it was first used in the highwall or the Military Krag.

June 1st, 1894.  I do not now when the first Model 1892 Springfield Krag was manufactured.

I have close to 100 rounds. About 20 or so primed already. Asking 100 shipped.

First Military rifles were shipped in 1892.  I was sent a copy from the New Haven Evening Register, Jan 25, 1892 a couple days ago.  It talks about the fact that Winchester has perfected a new Military cartridge.  Although they don’t call it the 30-40 the description of this cartridge is clearly a 180 gr 30-40.

I was hoping the highwall got them first.  But the highwall may have been the first commercial rifle.

The Single Shot was the first commercial “Sporting” rifle that was chambered the 30 U.S. cartridge… it was also the first Smokeless powder rifle (predating the Model 1894 in 30 WCF by almost a full year).

Thanks for the conformation. I figured that was the case.  The Model 1895 Win Lee Navy may have been right there in the top few going to smokeless.  They  definitely had the smallest caliber, .243″.  US rifle and US cartridge.

Winchester first chambered the .236 Lee Navy cartridge in the Single Shot (if memory serves, Winchester assembled six rifles and sent them to the Indian Head military testing facility).  The rifles were shipped February 11th, 1896.  The first Lee Navy rifles were manufactured 6-months later in August of 1896.

The .236″ or 6 mm call outs are somewhat misleading. The diameter of the bullet is .243″/6 mm.  The lands diameter is .236″.  The first production Military rifle, Ser. #4, was sent to the Military Aug. 31, 1896.  A total of 1,500 rifles were delivered to the Navy yard in 1896.

I just acquired (295) 30-40 pieces of brass, (200) of which is new unprimed R-P and W-W brass. I also have (100) Hornady cases.  Total count is (540) of which (120) have been reloaded.  I believe that I am set for life for my 30-40 shooting needs.
