I was wondering if any readers are interested in, or have researched the history of, telescopic sights made by John W Sidle of  Philadelphia, PA.  Apparently, such scopes were used on Winchester rifles.

Completely out of my collecting/research interests but I was recently contacted by a man who acquired such an item and he is interested in learning more about it.

Thanks

Don

Did a quick search.  Can’t find anything other than Sidle was a microscope builder.

He was the LEADING scope maker from the 1890s to about WW I, by which time the competition from, first, Stevens, then Winchester, put him out of business.  All the great SS target shooters of that time chose his scopes in preference to all others.

Don,

I bought one of his scopes about twenty years ago, but it does not have the mounts and screws – I’d like to have one that is complete.  Does this person have these items as well?  He can purchase Catalogue No. 4, Sidle Telescopic Rifle Sights from Cornell Publications should he like to learn more about them.

John Sidle moved his business to the L.A. area, if I recall correctly.  I have or had some personal correspondence of his, to include, the envelope that it was mailed in.

James
