I ran a search on a Model 73.  It’s a 1st model .44-40 w/a 30″ bbl.  The searched returned with the following note:

Sights: O.S. rear

What does this mean?  Attached is a pic of the current rear sight.

Thanks – Greg

Greg,

There is a sight called a Oat Sight but I think it was a front sight which no one I have talked to knows what it really is.

I checked my survey and the Oat sight is a front sight and the O.S. Rear is different. I have 5 guns with the O.S. Rear sight and they all are early first models.

Greg,

Is there any sign in the wear of of the finish or metal that there was another type of sight on it? If there is no other sign then it could be what Casey said since these were on very early 73’s

The picture I posted is the only one I can obtain – this rifle is up for auction tomorrow.  It’s a nice old ’73 but just thought the Cody search was interesting.  Thanks for everyone’s input.
