Without the serial number I can’t say which one it should have. They switched from the short sight to a longer one during the second model. Here is a long type that would of been on it.

Thanks for your quick reply. A Buckhorn is what I figured came with it. SN is (I think) 84796, as it was presented/sold to me that way. But I wonder if it could be 81796. The second number is to where I could see it either way. Of course, I wish it were the “1”, but won’t assume it without better knowledge. Here’s some measurements. Makes sense that it is a Buckhorn.

That is 81796, The early ones where made that way. Its a later second model so you would of had a long buckhorn sight.

Thank you, Bob. I had sent off the same thoughts and photos to the Cody Firearms Office, so I feel they will say the same thing. Looks like either number would have been made in 1882, but lower is more interesting, yes? Now to replace an authentic rear sight….
