I have a 2nd Model Sporting Rifle with a 24″ round barrel.  The gun came with a broken/missing rear sight.  Is there any one appropriate sight, or did this model come with differing factory-issued sights?  See photos, and thanks!

Without the serial number I can’t say which one it should have. They switched from the short sight to a longer one during the second model. Here is a long type that would of been on it.

Bob,

Thanks for your quick reply.  A Buckhorn is what I figured came with it.  SN is (I think) 84796, as it was presented/sold to me that way.  But I wonder if it could be 81796.  The second number is to where I could see it either way.  Of course, I wish it were the “1”, but won’t assume it without better knowledge.  Here’s some measurements.  Makes sense that it is a Buckhorn.

Regards,

Harrison

Harrison,

That is 81796, The early ones where made that way. Its  a later second model so you would of had a long buckhorn sight.

Thank you, Bob.  I had sent off the same thoughts and photos to the Cody Firearms Office, so I feel they will say the same thing.  Looks like either number would have been made in 1882, but lower is more interesting, yes?  Now to replace an authentic rear sight….

Adios,

Harrison
