I saw this tang sight on Ebay the other day and can’t find it anywhere in the books. The seller has it described incorrectly as a marbles because of the box I guess. He says no markings/stampings on the sight anywhere. Anyone know anything about this one? Thanks, Peter

I am not a sight expert but that appears to me to be a Lyman 1A for mounting on the bolt cocking piece of a 1903 Springfield or Krag.

The Lyman 2A is very similar but the way I keep them straight is the 1A had the fold-down eyepiece and the 2A had the screw-in eyepiece.

Here is the 2A (missing the stem) Image Enlarger

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the learn JWA.  Did you see that in a book or just have seen the sight and maybe the box? I looked in about three sources and saw no mention of it. Maybe I need to buy a new book. Always appreciate people who know things and are willing to share. Peter

Hi Peter,

I am not a sight collector but I knew about the 1A/2A because I have a 1903 with a 2A on it so I recognized it immediately.  The picture of the 2A I stole from the web this morning just to illustrate the box.   Nick Stroebel’s book Old Gunsights also mentions it in the Lyman chapter.  If you don’t have his book it is one of the better resources for sight information.

Best Regards,

Hi Jeff, I have the Stroebel book you mention except mine is “OLD GUNSIGHTS & RIFLE SCOPES”. I have read about the 1A, 2A etc, but see no pictures of a Lyman with a dovetail base anywhere, nor did I see any mention of it in the text. Is it mentioned in your edition? Thanks, Peter

Hi Peter,

I have both of Nick’s books; Old Gunsights and Old Gunsights and Rifle Scopes.

I dug them out tonight and in my editions it is illustrated and described on page 48 in Old Gunsights and on page 40 in Old Gunsights and Rifle Scopes.

Hope that helps.
