Saw a tang sight marked “ Lyman Middlefield” on a circa 1927 1890 yesterday. The rest of the rifle was unremarkable, just a decent 70% gun. Can’t recall seeing one of these before, anyone care to enlighten me a bit?

Mike,

Sometime after WW I, Lyman started marking he upper side of the sight base in the manner you found on that Model 90 rifle. What was the serial number on the rifle, and which cartridge is it chambered for?

Mike,

Adding to what Bert mentioned: Lyman Sight Catalog 16 (1927/28) shows the No. 103 tang sight’s upper base Lyman Middlefield Conn. USA.

Bert-

SN is 751483, 22 Long Rifle.

James-

Interesting, it appears the sight has been on this rifle for quite some time.

Thanks to both of you. It has the type rear sight that’s retained by a screw. May have to spend a little time with my Schwing book before I take another look.

Mike,

The rifle was serialized in mid June 1927, and the Lyman tang sight on it is certainly period correct (if not factory installed).
