First post here so hello to all.  Great site!..  I have a nice 1873 rifle that came to me with a W-marked Lyman tang sight and this curious Lyman-marked folding barrel sight.  Madis & Stroebel make no mention of it, so if anyone knows anything about it, I’d love to be brought up to speed.  It’s a standard 3/8” dovetail with a single folding leaf, containing no sighting notch and a tiny horizontal cylindrical rod of Ivory.  Thanks.

It looks like a variation of the #6 Lyman rear sight but I don’t see how the ivory would be used for sighting.

It is a Lyman No. 6 (early variant).

At first glance I thought it was the remnant of an old sight that was broken off due to a fall, drop, etc.  Glad to find out it’s an intact period add-on. Thanks for the clarification.
