Mike, I have a rifle that has the heel sight location.  Shoots 45 1/10.

Yes!

But still waiting to see another Winchester lever rifle set up for a heel sight.

Cool

Well that is a Bert project.  The highwalls were late to the game when it came to the international long range competitions.  Most that I have seen were made in the 1870’s and not by Winchester.  Are you looking for an easy out?  I’d love to see you all balled up with my S rifle.

Chuck,

That is simply, a very nice looking rifle! I like everything about it!

 Steve,

I don’t recall seeing one on an 1885. I would guess that maybe Pope or one of the earlier shooters back in the day, maybe had one. I do agree with you, as Bert, is the one to enlighten us, on it!

I always thought that the heal sight, on some of the older rifles, that we’re known for them, was pretty intriguing. At least to a few of us, whether they we’re known to be seen on a Winchester Single Shot or not.

I’m not interested in the rifle but I did want Bert to see who is selling it.  Tom Burness is a long time well respected gun dealer that I have not heard from in many years.

Tom’s been around a very long time.  Great guy.  I bought a couple Bullards from him – probably 30 years ago.  Maybe more years if I think about it.  Still have them!  I recall some phone conversations I had with him – a very honest and knowledgeable guy.  I recall he didn’t try to, “sell” you anything.  I remember he had a Marlin M1895 in .50-110.  It likely wasn’t original of course – and he didn’t suggest it was.  However, the rifle had appeal to me. I remember him cautioning me:  “don’t talk yourself into it.”  That was a level of kindness that is rare among dealers.

Chuck,

Like you, I had not heard anything from Tom in many years (and had mistakenly assumed the worst).  I found that listing a few weeks ago and contacted Tom to information him that the rifle is actually antique.  He wrote back thanking me for the information.  It is an interesting rifle, but not in the condition level I am looking for.

Did you tell him it is a 45-125 not a 45-140?  I only bought 1 gun from him.  Walt and I went to his house so Walt could buy a 50 Cal DLX 76.  I was blown away by his collection of brass rifles.  When he was doing his catalogs he always pointed out any issues.  Then when he started selling on line he made sure there was a picture of any problem areas.   I don’t need 2.  But this is only the 2nd one I’ve ever seen for sale.  I’m waiting for you to find me one of the 50’s.

Yes, I mentioned that to him.
