I have an 1886 Extra light weight that letters with “Sights,  High Velocity”. The gun is equipped with a Lyman 21 rear sight and a Lyman front hunting sight, What does ‘”High Velocity” mean?

I believe that it means the rifle was set up for smokeless rounds vs. black powder. I don’t know how you would ever know if it left the factory with the Lyman 21. I would think it would note “Lyman receiver” in the letter. Does it have a blank in the rear slot with no signs of wear from an elevator just ahead of the blank? Also, is the receiver sight coded “NI” on the back side? I assume the rifle is a 45-70.

Yes , it is 45-70. The 21 receiver sight is marked “N” with a Lyman front hunting sight. The center sight is a Lyman #6 and looks original. The gun was Shipped in 1904.. I have only seen one box of 45-70 marked “High Velocity”.

The 1916 Winchester Catalog has a section on cartridges and ballistics.

Several cartridges are listed as “W.H.V.” and show the difference in trajectories and velocities.

Hope this may help.

Reprints of this catalog are available and most come in hard cover.

A great reference book.
