I have a short rifle Model 92 in .44-40. It has a 22″ barrel. SN 397355. I plan to change out the sights and install a Lyman folding globe in front and a King full buckhorn in the rear. I have a short King that I presume is for a carbine and a longer King for a rifle. Does it matter which length King sight I use? I plan on shooting no further than 150 yds out using the rear sight.
Thanks – Greg
It looks like they made a flat top, semi-buckhorn and full buckhorn rear in the short length for Winchester Carbines and Savage small caliber rifles, according to the 1931 catalog. The sight “…has been designed to fit carbines and small caliber rifles which have the rear slot near the frame not allowing the use of a sight with a longer stem or spring.” It looks like it has a shorter elevator also. I do not know whether the short ones were available or not when SN 397355 was made if that matters. Do the sights have the ’07 Patent date on them?
Hope that helps,
Brad
Hi Brad – yes, each sight has the ’07 patent date on it. The rifle currently has a Marbles flat-top with a rifle-length stem. The sight slot measures 5″ even from the middle of the dovetail to the top edge of the receiver. So I guess a rifle-length sight would be fine then???
Greg
I’m not real familiar with the 1892 Greg. I would guess that if the full length King rear sight fits and does not cover up any markings on the barrel it will be fine. I imagine the full length King sight will cover the wear marks from the Marble sight.
Twobit or someone else would probably know what the typical Winchester rear sight was for the Model 1892 then. The Winchester sporting rear sights are about 3″ long total and about 2 1/2″ long from the center of the dovetail in case you wanted to put a regular Winchester sight on it someday in the future and didn’t want to create any new wear on the top of the barrel.
