My eyes are too old. Two of my Winchester 1894 rifles have sights that blur too much for me.
The octagon rifle SN near 200,000 has a Lyman tang sight, but someone switched out the front sight with one of inferior quality and appears to lean a tad to the left.
The round barreled rifle SN near 1,000,000 I plan to equip with a Marble’s tang sight. The front sight on this is black and bland–difficult for me to readily aim.
For each of these rifles, what front sight (with a bead) would you recommend? How tall? Where to buy them?
As for the Marble’s tang sight, I have a W1 on hand to use. But for future rifles, does someone sell W1 and W2’s regularly? I used to buy from Ken Bean, but haven’t been able to contact him lately.
Mike is a great guy to deal with. He also has a small ad in the back of our Collector magazine.
The height of the front sight can depend on the barrel and what you are shooting for a bullet and velocity. There are a ton of options if you don’t care about being period correct. I like a gold bead myself, preferably the smallest bead available.

I’ve just finished reading “22 caliber Rifle Shooting ” by C. S. Landis, and was curious about how much stock the old timers put into gold and red bead sights in that order. Tried painting one of mine red and it helps these old eyes. Works best with peep but helps open too. JMHO
