Gentlemen and Ladies;
I have at this time but one 1894 Winchester Carbine in what’s left of my collection. This 1906 carbine was originally ordered with a special shellac finish on its wood, a 3 Leaf Express rear sight, a Marbles front sight, and lastly a Tang sight. All these “Special Ordered” items are listed in a Factory Letter, all this on what would normally be a plain Winchester 32 Special caliber carbine. Winchester did include “Special Order” items on their factory letters.

For the newer collectors just getting into this(like me), can you or anyone else provide examples of the special order sights? Front or back. I think this would be a good reply to post ie; Front German silver blade, folding No 5, hunting No 4, No 3 Lyman, full buckhorn, 3 Leaf, tang?
Most such info (inc. illustrations & prices) is provided in the various editions of WRA catalogs, cheap reprints of which are readily available; the “new collector” who doesn’t avail himself of these resources is groping in the dark. Sometime between 1894 & 1899, a new section was added to catalogs called “Sighting Winchester Rifles,” which is useful reading (p. 67 in the ’99 ed.) For most models, the so-called “Sporting” front & rear sights were standard, everything else optional.
In addition to what Clarence said you need info on the Lyman and other sight manufacturers too. If you don’t have Stroebel’s Old Gunsights book you should buy it. Madis’ book and the catalogs mostly show Winchester sights with some Lyman and Beach. It has been my experience that Lyman has been the most prevalent.
