I am wondering if anyone, especially Bert, has any information on the manufacture dates/serial numbers on these guns? I have been reading Bruce Canfield’s book on Winchester in the Service and he has some info. I also looked at The Red Book of Winchester Values. The first WW I contract was on 4/16/1917. The first WW II contract was on 11/1941. Can we clearly identify the first and last gun produced for each war? Canfield says that he has “noted” 630000 to 707000 for WW I and roughly 910000 to 960000 for WW II.
Chuck,
My research survey and the PR records indicate that Canfield and Poyer were close with the serial number ranges they published in their respective books. That stated, the WW II Trench Guns are for the most part all in the 919000 – 959000 serial range. The WW I Trench Guns are nearly all in the 668000 – 705800 serial range. There are a very small number of outliers on both sides of the serial number ranges I have observed (surveyed)..
