Hello, I have a Winchester Mod 42 Skeet Simmons Vent Rib with an engraved silver pistol cap. The S/N is 1633XX
I’m trying to find out if this is a Simmon’s 42 that Winchester sent to Simmons to add a vet rib.
The records I find on the internet show that the 42 serial number stopped at 159353 in 1963 but when I called Winchester, they said it was made in 1962.
Any help would be appreciated.

Bill,
Unfortunately, the vast majority of what you find today on the internet concerning Winchester DOMs is not accurate. The last actual Model 42 serial number was 164801 on September 10th, 1963. Your Model 42 was manufactured sometime after April 16th, 1962, but before May 10th, 1962.
If the VR is marked “Simmons”, Winchester did not send it to them for the rib install.

Thanks, Bert, for the info. The rib is marked ” Simmons Gun Specialty INC Kansas City MO.”
Just to confirm, you think this is a 1942 (not 1962) year of production with the serial number 1633XX.
Thanks again for your help.

Bill,
I must have had the “42” number stuck in my head when I replied, and incorrectly stated 1942. I have since corrected that post, and the correct year of manufacture for your Model 42 is “1962”.

Bill,
It is highly unlikely that the silver PG cap is factory work. You can send a picture of it to me @ [email protected]

Bill, you should try to get “THE WINCHESTER MODEL 42” book by Ned Schwing. It has the information you seek on page 54. There is a photograph showing the proper “SIMMONS GUN SPECIALTIES INC. KANSAS CITY, MO.” roll mark used from about 160,000 to end of production. I have a similar Model 42 “Skeet” serial #158004. Winchester sent the barrels to Simmons for rib installation, then the barrel was returned to be assembled by Winchester. RDB
