I have a 1897 Winchester riot gun as it has a 20 inch barrell. It has what looks like a “PW” stamped at the base of the barrell with the same stamping at the top right of the receiver off to the left of the barrell. Does anyone know what this might signify?

The marking you refer to is a super-posed “W” & “P” which is short for “Winchester Proof”. All Winchester Model 1897 shotguns manufactured after July 1905 will have those same stamped proof marks.

Great, thanks for the information!. I have owned the gun for close to 40 years and am thinking of selling it. I am just trying to come up with a realistic price for it. Would you have any idea as to the value of this shotgun?
