Looking for information on a Winchester 1897. Serial # 415466 with a D above the serial number. Below the serial number are the letters I. P. and below that are the numbers 166. The butt stock has the numbers 11377 on the left side.

The serial number identifies it as a 1908 production gun. The letters “I.P” and numbers “166” were added by a past owner after the fact. Is your Model 1897 a Riot Gun?

More than likely it was formerly a Police Dept. or Prison guard gun. Proving that is extremely difficult without any evidence or provenance.
