Kicking around a vintage skeet gun. I have a nice enough Citori CX for most days but I love shooting my old Winchester trap guns now and then, might as well add an old Winchester skeet gun to the stable. I’m currently leaning towards a Model 12 20 ga Skeet gun and a 21 is probably outside of my reach. I’ve considered a 24 but haven’t found one I liked yet. I’m not a serious (low 20’s) skeet shooter so any solid gun will serve me well.

Suggestions?

Mike,

I think you are right on track with the model 12. The model 50 semi auto may be an option….. Don’t know if you prefer slides to auto’s.

Thanks for bringing up the Model 50, Erin. Been looking for an excuse to acquire one. I haven’t seen a skeet version, let alone a 20ga skeet version but that could work. I actually prefer doubles and pumps but an auto makes sense. I like the prices I’m seeing in the Red Book, may actually be able to afford one!

Hi Mike,

I can’t say for sure if they made an actual skeet version either. I’m surely thinking they made 20’s with an Improved Cyl. choke tho…..  Probably a little easier on the pocket book also. My uncle had one in a full choke 12, used to run down to his place at lunch hour from high school. A river ran right behind it with a slough about 50 yards wide. It was a haven for Mallards and Woody’s. Shot lots of Ducks with that old gun and can’t ever remember a malfunction.

Best,

Erin

Red Book lists Skeet guns in 20ga but I’ve only seen 12ga field guns. Did a little poking around last night, nothing yet. There’s a Model 12 that I need to research a bit, may need to do a Cody inquiry and post a few pics for feedback.

Quite honestly I’d never noticed the Model 50 until I read the thread about them in this section soon after joining the forum. I suspect the lukewarm collector interest is a double edged sword for someone seeking a Model 50; keeps prices down but not many dealers willing to buy & resell them for the small profit.

Found a 12 ga. with a WS-1 skeet barrel     https://www.gunbroker.com/item/817184058

Here is a 20 with an I/C choke          https://www.gunbroker.com/item/809421656

There is 5 pages of them on GB, I only glanced at the first couple.

Thanks, not much on Gunbroker but I do a little research on there. As I’m in no hurry I’ll probably hold out for a vent rib gun. That 12ga w/ SK-1 choke is tempting but…

Aside from the M21 and M23/24, the Model 12 20g Skeet is perfect for the task.  I inherited my father’s 1954 version choked to WS-1 with the donut post vent rib.  It’s one of my favorites for knocking down clays.
