Steve,

Winchester did not install (or offer) Ribs on any of the Model 1897 shotguns.  Any gun you might find with a Rib, it was installed aftermarket.  Undoubtedly, Simmons installed a few Vent Ribs on them over the years.

Thanks Bert.  I’ve seen very few ribs on M1897’s over the years.  Good to know they were all aftermarket.
