A friend of mine has recently inherited a collection of older guns and is looking to sell. The most interesting among them to me is a Winchester 97 pump with the serial number 4239xx. The family believe it to be circa 1910 and that it has been reblued. There is no military heat shield. Could this have been a police model riot gun? What would be a fair price for this model?

The partial serial number you provided indicates that your Model 1897 was manufactured in the year 1908.  A complete serial number will allow me to pin it down to the specific month.

Winchester did not begin manufacture of military contract Trench Guns until the Fall of 1917.  Commercial sales Riot Guns were available in the year 1908, but with rare exception were all Solid frame guns with a 20-inch CYL bore barrel.

What is the barrel length on your gun?

What is the choke marking?

Does it have a “D”, or an “E” stamped above the serial number on the receiver frame?

Solid frame or Take Down?

42963 full serial, is an 18 inch. Seems to have somewhere where It could be taken down in the middle of the buttstock?

Model 1897 s/n 42963 was manufactured in November 1897.  As originally manufactured, it was a Solid Frame Standard (Field) grade gun with a 30-inch Full choke barrel.  The barrel has been cut down to its current length.

Could you run the serial number 423963 for me, I accidentally mistyped it and left a number out. Also Any thoughts on pricing?
