Hello

looked at a 980,000 something model 97 Winchester in riot configuration, a takedown also, barrel is marked cyl and doesn’t appear to be cut down, no military or police markings, serial numbers on barrel and receiver are matching and look factory , the issue is the receiver number is in block style and the barrel is in the old cursive style , would like to know if it possibly is legit. Barrel markings are also in the late 40’s early 50’s style . Please help

thanks

Herb

Hello Herb,

The estimated serial number you mention indicates that the gun was manufactured in late 1947 or early 1948.  The actual serial number will pin it down to a specific date.

Winchester never used “cursive” style (or italicized) numerals for the Model 1897 (97) serial numbers.  All serial numbers were the block style from day one of production.

Can you provide pictures of the gun in question?

Bert
