I have the opportunity to purchase what appears to be a field grade, 3″ chamber, Full choke, plain barrel model 42.
Ser. # is 16XX, making it a first year, 1933 gun. From the photos my son sent me, the wood and bluing look original. The receiver has even wear from use, worn on the edges and high points, but not abused. Maybe 85-90% on bluing. Barrel of course looks better as not handled as much. Wood I would say is very good to excellent. It appears to be an all original gun that was used for a while anyway, but well cared for.
My primary question is, does early serial number and date affect value? What is value? Its a fairly basic 42 in very good shape for its age otherwise. See photos attached.
William,
The serial number indicates that it was manufactured in May 1933 (per the tables in Herb Houze’s book). The fact that it is a 1st year gun might add 5 – 10% to the value for some collectors. I would value it at $1700 – $1800.

Hello William,
I just sold this Model 42 on Gunbroker. It is a bit higher number than yours and similar condition. You can use it for comparison. http:http://www.gunbroker.com/item/619991223/www.gunbroker.com/item/619991223
