I purchased this c series 1897 about 20 years ago serial # C57835  (1898) . I know the forearm is a replacement , but the buttstock I’m not sure about. It has the flat bottom pistol grip,

My question is when did they stop putting the round knob on the 97’s.20220624_182518-2.jpgImage Enlarger

Winchester started using the flat bottom pistol grip in early 1907.

Based on the information in my research survey, Winchester first began using the semi-pistol grip butt stocks in October 1906, and completed the transition from the older round-knobbed pistol grip 9n June 1907.  The round-knob pistol grip continued to be offered through the year 1917 as a special order item when a shorter than standard LOP was desired.

Thanks Burt .

Could you possibly tell me what size the early 97 forend screws are . Mine are terribly worn , and a thread gage just won’t work. I appears to be 10-32 .

Thanks

Jim

Those are the ones . Trouble is no one lists the size. I’m a machinist and I can recut the threads but I need the exact size.

Thanks again

Give them a call and ask for a verification. Tell them you need to know to clean up your existing threads.
