In what years did Winchester have the flange added to the model 12 carrier and what was it for

Think I got some of the answer. It was mostly on field or skeet guns to prevent shell from popping out of port when pumping and swinging at the same time. Still would like to know start and end dates for this attachment

I heard that the change was first made to the Model 12 WWII military shotguns.  I do not know if that is accurate.
