I picked up a nice 20 gauge Model 12 a while back and am trying to figure out what it is.It has a vent rib, skeet choke marked on the barrel and checkered stock and forearm. Serial number is 1923387. Not marked “Skeet” on the receiver. I thought it might be a “Super Field “ model but as far as I’ve read those only had solid ribs.Is this correct?I have to dig it out to see if the rib is marked Simmons but I don’t think so.Any helpful information would be appreciated.

Joe,

The odds are good that you have a “Super Field” grade gun.  They were made with both a Solid and a Vent Rib.  The s/n ID’s it has a February 1961 production gun.

Can you post pictures of it?

Bert,I will send them to your email. Haven’t figured out how to post them online. The rib is NOT marked Simmons and there is a steel grip cap on it.
Any thoughts on value? Thanks for your help. Joe

The rib is a “Three Pin, Duck Bill Ventilated Rib”.  Shown on page 238 in the “The Greatest Hammerless Repeating Shotgun Ever Built”.  By Dave Riffle.  RDB

The three pin vent rib became available in 1961.  It appears to be a Skeet Grade gun.  These later Skeet Grades were not marked “Skeet”.  I have a 1954 Skeet Grade simular to yours except it has the earlier Donut style rib.  You have a very nice Model 12!

What a beauty!  And a 20 gauge to boot. That’s 20th Century Winchester at its best, I think. If you should ever tire of it….don’t hesitate to call.
