Hello all,

I’m new to this forum and it looks like there are some very knowledgable people onboard. I just purchased a model-42 with a plain barrel marked MOD. It appears to date from 1941. It has a skeet checkered forend that looks like it’s from that vintage and an uncheckered stock with a Winchester grip cap. I’m sure it’s a field grade but did Winchester ever make a field grade with that combination of stock and forend or were they most likely changed?

I tried uploading an image but I guess I have to be a paid member?

Thank You,

SC

Ned Schwing’s book on the Model 42 states that checked prewar guns rarely had the plastic grip cap.  There is no mention of an unchecked stock with a grip cap at all.  RDB
